IMPORTANT: Look for your child’s Medicaid or CHIP renewal in the mail, complete it and mail it back immediately. They may be covered even if you’re not! Every child currently covered by Medicaid or CHIP will need to go through a renewal process within the next several months. Keep your child covered and healthy. Complete the renewal as soon as you get it in the mail! Go to Medicaid.gov/renewals to find contact information for your state Medicaid office.

Maternal Health

In 2020, the maternal mortality rate in the U.S. was 24 deaths per 100,000 live births — more than three times the rate in most other high-income countries. Over 80% of pregnancy-related deaths were determined to be preventable. Together, Medicaid and CHIP cover about 42% of births in the US and play a critical role in ensuring access to care for pregnant and postpartum individuals, improving the quality of maternal health care, and addressing disparities in health outcomes and pregnant and postpartum care.

Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) offer free or low-cost health coverage for pregnant individuals and offer a range of services including prenatal visits, postpartum care and other comprehensive services.

Postpartum care is covered in all 50 states at least through the first 60 days. Many states have extended Medicaid and CHIP coverage to include the first 12 months of the postpartum period.

When parents have health insurance, kids are more likely to get health coverage too. When pregnant people are enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP, their newborns are automatically enrolled. Having health insurance from a young age can set kids up for a bright and healthy future.

The Connecting Kids to Coverage National Campaign has resources to inform families of these benefits and encourage utilization of maternal health services. Be sure to explore the Outreach Tool Library for additional outreach materials available to help connect families to coverage.
