You probably have many questions about applying for health insurance for your children. Here are some questions and answers to get you started:

Why is the government providing health insurance for children?
The government wants to help working families like yours protect their children's health and future. The government also wants to make sure that people get the services they are eligible to receive. In order to reach working families like yours, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is working with your state to promote these important health programs.

How old do my children have to be in order to receive the health insurance through my state's program?
In most places, children from birth up to age 19 can receive health insurance through their state's children's health insurance program. Remember each state has its own program.

What kind of benefits can my children receive in my state's children's health insurance program(s)?
Your children will receive needed exams, treatments, and prescriptions. Services such as doctor visits and hospital care are covered. In many states, children may also receive dental care, eye care, and medical equipment.

Who can apply for health insurance for my child?
Each state has its own rules about who can apply, like parents, grandparents or guardians. Call 1-877-543-7669 to find out the rules for your state. Your call will be free and confidential. You can find links to the State program Web sites.

Do I have to give my social security number to get health insurance for my child?
No. Parents and other household members who are not applying for benefits cannot be required to give their social security numbers to get health insurance for their children. However, you may need to provide your child's social security number.

Do I have to give information about my immigration status in order to get health insurance for my children?
No. Parents and other household members do not have to give any information about their immigration status to get health insurance for their children.

What other information will I have to provide to get health insurance for my children?
Even though you don't have to give information about your immigration status or your social security number, you still will have to give information about your family's income. You also may be asked to provide proof of your family's income.

I'm applying to become a U.S. citizen. Can I still apply for health insurance for my children without affecting my chances of becoming a citizen?
Yes, you can apply for health insurance for your children without affecting your chances of becoming a U.S. citizen.

I am a migrant farm worker. Where can I get health services for my children?
Your family may have access to a migrant health center where free or low-cost health services are provided to adults and children. Call toll free 1-888-ASK-HRSA (1-888-275-4772) to find a migrant health center near you and to find out about other programs available to you and your family. Remember that your children may also be eligible for your State’s health insurance program for children.
